In this in-depth 2-day workshop, you will learn all about natural dyeing and the chemistry behind creating permanent color on fabric using locally foraged and homegrown plants. This will cover everything from setting up your own studio to preparing your fabric for dye and how to create prints by directly applying various mordants using printing blocks and brushes. Working with the direct application of various mordants will give you a hands-on understanding of how different mordants react with different plants and how to achieve multiple colors from one plant. You will leave with your own creations on organic cotton fabric, plus fabric swatches of various fabric, plant, and mordant combinations to keep for your own records.

Please note this is a 2 day, in person workshop taking place on the 17th (10am-4pm) and 18th (12pm-3pm) of February, 2024.

The workshop will take place at Kithship’s brick and mortar in Livingston, MT.

About Mariah:

Mariah is a nature-craft artist with an endless fascination for natural dyes. She especially enjoys working with local and homegrown plants that she grows or forages. She is particularly interested in foraging for plants that are considered invasive such as St. John’s wort, Tansy and Dock as a way to both honor the plant and support native landscapes. She  began teaching and hosting workshops through her previous business, Wilder Goods, and now operates under her new business, Local Earth. She recently completed The Chemistry of Natural Dyes and Printing with Natural Dyes – two courses from the Maiwa School of Textiles and Screen Printing with Natural Dyes from The Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn. She is excited to share both her newfound knowledge and her years of experimentation working with local plants. She lives outside Bozeman with her husband, 10-year-old daughter, and animals, both domestic and wild.
